Juice Jars: Everything You Need to Know

octobre 17, 2025

Want to keep your homemade juice fresh for long? You’ll need an airtight container, such as the Hurom glass juice jar. It helps prevent oxidation, which, in turn, preserves flavor and texture.

But is a glass jar your only option? Not really. There are also plastic and stainless steel options.

In this article, I’ll answer all your questions related to juice jars and show you how to store your juice like a pro.

What are the Different Types of Juice Jars?

You have several options when it comes to juice containers. Although glass jars and bottles are more common, other materials are also used, such as stainless steel and plastic.

Let’s look at some in more detail to find out their pros (and any cons, too).

Glass Jars (Like Mason Jars)

Glass jars with stainless steel lids, like the Hurom Glass Jar, are a favorite among juicing enthusiasts like myself. And that’s for a reason. First of all, they’re non-reactive and airtight, which helps keep the juice fresh for a long time. Secondly, they’re visually appealing and clean.

But beyond Pinterest-worthy looks, glass jars have practical benefits. Glass doesn’t leach chemicals, which makes it ideal for acidic juices like orange or pineapple. With reusable metal or silicone lids, they’re also environmentally friendly and perfect for refrigerator storage. And lastly, the glass in mason jars is sturdy, and the whole thing is dishwasher safe.

Glass Bottles

Glass bottles are also popular for cold-pressed juices. They’re great for on-the-go freshness. They come with narrow necks and screw caps that limit oxidation by minimizing air exposure. Many juice bars rely on them because they preserve taste while offering professional presentation.

Personally, I don’t see any significant difference between glass jars and juice bottles, except for the shape. And in many cases, they’re made from the same quality of glass. That said, I find it easier to drink from juicing bottles, especially when I don’t have a straw.

Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles are lightweight and less fragile than glass. That makes them travel-friendly, particularly those with a leak-proof cap. And because of the material, they’re also cheaper.

However, not all plastics are created equal. Therefore, always look for BPA-free bottles made from food-grade PET or Tritan plastic. These materials are more durable, heat-resistant, and don’t release harmful compounds into your juice.

Stainless Steel Jars and Bottles

If you want durability and insulation, stainless steel jars are a strong option. They protect juice from light exposure, which can degrade certain vitamins. Also, they are nearly unbreakable.

Another benefit of some of these bottles is that they maintain the temperature of their contents. So, they keep hot things warm and cold things chilled. While that’s convenient, it’s not ideal for refrigeration since the metal slows cooling.

So, if you’re putting your juice in the fridge, it's best to use a glass or plastic container. On the other hand, if you’re traveling or commuting and want to keep your juice colder, use one of these insulated stainless steel flasks.

Keep in mind, though, these containers are best for short-term use, you can’t see the juice level or spot juice separation like you can with glass.

Why Use Juice Jars? What are the Benefits of Juice Jars?

If you make fresh juice at home with a juicer like Hurom, investing in proper jars is worth it. There are plenty of benefits of using it, let’s explore them:

Batch Juicing

If you prepare several juice servings at once for days or even the whole week, jars make portioning and storage easy without constant cleanup. You can label and refrigerate each jar for the week ahead. They’re perfect for meal-prepping or busy mornings.

I use stickers and even sticky notes to mark the date I made the juice. It’s a simple way to track freshness and make sure I drink it before it goes bad.

Preserves Freshness

Airtight jars minimize oxidation, which is the main reason fresh juice loses nutrients, changes color, and separates over time. When air (oxygen) reacts with the enzymes and antioxidants in the juice, they start to change the color, taste, and texture of the juice.

Glass or stainless steel options are particularly effective at blocking air. They help maintain both taste and vitamin content.

Travel-Friendly

Compact jars fit perfectly into lunch bags or gym kits. Artight lids also make them ideal for carrying smoothies, infused water, cold brew coffee, and, of course, cold-pressed juices and smoothies on the go.

How Long Does Fresh Juice Last in Mason Jars?

Freshly made juice typically lasts 24 to 48 hours when refrigerated. But if you store it in tightly sealed Mason jars and fill them to the brim to reduce air exposure, it can stay fresh for up to 72 hours

Keep the temperature below 40°F (4°C), and avoid opening the jar repeatedly. Keep in mind that each exposure to air speeds up oxidation.

It’s best to use an 18-ounce glass mason jar to store one or two servings of juice that you can just have in one go.

Is It Better to Store Juice in Plastic or Glass Jars and Bottles?

Glass jars are the gold standard for juice storage. They don’t absorb odors, resist staining, and offer a pure taste. Also, they cool quickly, so if you want to chill your juice fast, they’re a good option.

Plastic bottles, although lighter, can degrade over time and may retain lingering flavors from previous batches.

For long-term use or acidic juices, a glass jar is both safer and more sustainable. Plastic can still be fine for short-term storage or travel if it’s BPA-free and labeled food-safe.

That brings me to the next important question about plastic juice bottles.

Is BPA-Free Plastic Safe?

“BPA-free” means the product doesn’t contain Bisphenol A, a chemical linked to hormonal disruption and even chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension. However, research shows that some BPA alternatives (like BPS) can have similar effects.

The safest route is to use high-quality BPA-free plastics like Tritan. Make sure to opt for plastic bottles and flasks that are tested for food safety and designed to resist leaching even when exposed to acidic liquids.

Note: Tritan is also used in Hurom juicers, particularly for the juice chamber in models like the H320 Slow Juicer, because it’s food-safe, as approved by the FDA.

Why BPA is Bad for You?

BPA can mimic estrogen, a naturally occurring hormone in the body. It then interferes with hormone regulation.

Research from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences links long-term BPA exposure to fertility issues, metabolic disorders, and increased cancer risk. That’s why it’s banned from being used in food containers in places like Germany and Canada.

Since juice contains natural acids that can draw BPA out of containers, avoiding it is especially important for health-conscious juicers.

How to Vacuum Seal Fresh Juice?

Vacuum sealing removes air from the jar to slow oxidation and bacterial growth. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Pour your juice into a mason jar and leave half an inch of headspace.

  2. Use a jar vacuum sealer attachment or a handheld sealer to remove air completely.

  3. Store sealed jars in the refrigerator or freezer.

  4. Open only what you plan to drink right away. Once opened, finish the juice within 24 hours.

Properly vacuum-sealed juice can last up to 5 days in the refrigerator without significant nutrient loss.

How to Pick the Right Juice Jar Size?

Glass juice jars come in various sizes and lid styles. Choose the size that fits your needs best. Here are a few quick recommendations:

  • 8 oz jars: Great for single servings or children’s portions.

  • 18 oz jars: Perfect for daily personal use and easy fridge stacking.

  • 32 oz jars: Ideal for storing larger batches or sharing.

Always choose a jar size that leaves minimal empty space inside—the less air, the slower the oxidation.

How to Keep Juice Fresh for a Long Time?

If you want to keep juice fresh for longer, you must store it the right way

  • Fill jars completely to minimize air.

  • Use airtight lids (like the ones with silicone seals or rubber O-rings).

  • Refrigerate immediately after juicing.

  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperature changes.

  • Add lemon juice (its natural citric acid helps preserve color and vitamin C).

  • Label and date each jar so you know how long it’s been stored.

For even longer preservation, longer than 72 hours, consider freezing the juice. But when freezing juice, you have to be extra careful. If storing in glass jars or bottles, make sure there’s some headspace for expansion. Otherwise, the glass might crack or break when the liquid expands on freezing.

The same applies to plastic and stainless steel containers. They might not break like glass, but they can get a bit wonky.

Embrace Healthy Living with Fresh Juice

Fresh juice is always better than store-bought. But if you don’t have time to make a new glass every day, that’s where good juice containers help. Especially glass jars and bottles that keep your juice fresh for a few days.

To make things even easier, pair them with a quality juicer. Hurom’s slow juicers preserve nutrients, flavor, and color in every drop. Plus, its Easy Clean Series makes cleanup quick and effortless.
